Today's topic was very thought provoking and really steeped in a critical approach. I heard the many ways in which people cleared the noise and get the crux of the issue. What I find beautiful was that noise was different for most of us. What stood out for me was the varying approaches used by everyone to look at Doris' actions. Drew, took a more gentle, more emotional and more of a human approach- he looked at Doris within a larger context and framework and how the extreme sentence would have negatively impact her life. I love Amanda's view which was to research, assess, review and look at the issue within a broader context in term of time, as she juxtaposed the 70s with 2016 and look at the differences in the cost of living and how the differences of the economy could have influenced Doris' action. The varying ways of looking at this one issue allowed me to see how little I know but also taught me so much more. I recognize that when people who think critically get into a room that ideas will grow wide and deep.
Awesome discussion. grows better each week

Valerie Great synopsis… I really felt like there was an opportunity there to be critical of the laws and how we adjudicate them as well. Once again I wasn’t trying to explain away Doris’s unlawful acts. Had I found any evidence of unlawful activities during her 34 years avoiding law enforcement, I might have had found it easier to deny her clemency. However, it still would have highlighted our failures to sanction such harsh punishments for nonviolent crimes of that nature. I recently had a discussion with a neighbor who received a parking ticket for parking in a snow emergency zone of the parking lot. The cost of the ticket doubles if not paid in two weeks up to the maximum. Clearly, she should pay it before the two weeks to avoid extra fees. But what’s wrong with that scenario? I’ll leave it there…
