Post your answers to the following statements. Try to determine whether each statement sounds like a fact or an opinion. For each statement share your rationale for what you've determined. Respond to the statements from two other members of the group.
1. The deepest part of the ocean is 35,813 feet.
Stated as a fact. The measurements are specific.
2. Smoking is bad for your health.
This is an opinion as it is also not clear what is meant or what the writer is alluding to. We know that not everyone who smokes their health is affected, In addition, not everyone smokes, but use other methods of smoking- are they including in the 95%? In addition, the writer may be alluding to smoking meat or food.
3. 85% of all cases of lung cancer in the US are caused by smoking.
This is an opinion. Unless that all lung cancer patients are tested and not a sample, and that there is evidence that they were smoking we cannot say this is true, again, as stated above what does the writer mean by smoking?
4. One out of every hundred American Citizens is color blind.
This sounds like a fact. It appears that a random sample was taken and out of 100 times, someone was color blind.
5. Two out of ten American citizens are boring.
Opinion- it is the opinion of the writer and we still have to determine what boring means. People can be bored by many things or anything. Not everyone is bored by the same thing.
